LWVPRA is hosting Citizenship in an Anxious World: May 2nd at 6 pm.

League of Women Voters Park Rapids has been involved in the Park Rapids community since 1935.  We have always been deeply involved in helping existing and new voters understand the mechanics of voting as well as the issues impacting citizens. We believe in serving the needs of the voters in a non-partisan manner by encouraging participation in the voting process and by educating voters on candidates and issues.

Since January we have all been seeing or hearing about such things as polarization, partisanship, no compromise, how divided our county, state and nation is at this period of time.  Several opinion pieces/ letters to the editor such as: “Make the most out of 2024 with civility and respect”, “Word on the Street”, for example have addressed anxiety and concern about our upcoming elections. During informal conversations around town League members have also heard there is also a deeper concern about how we treat each other and how our community can work together to solve problems.

Statewide other groups have come together to address these problems too. In the MN Legislature  a  Civility Caucus, chaired by two lawmakers from the House and Senate, one Republican and one Democrat, has been formed. Another statewide campaign that “calls on Minnesotans across the political spectrum – liberals, conservatives and independents – to help reduce hostile polarization during what promises to be a politically divisive election year” will be hosting a series of events. This group includes League of Women Voters Minnesota, Braver Angels, the chairs of the state’s two major political parties plus 21 organizations that include elected officials, colleges and universities, Minnesota Public Radio, professional associations, and religious & civic groups. Other groups are starting to present programs to help Minnesotans have better political conversations.

LWV Park Rapids with support from Lakes Country Chamber of Commerce, and Park Rapids Enterprise, is hosting Citizenship in an Anxious World.  The program will be on Thursday May 2nd in the Northwoods Bank Community Room. It will start at 6:30 pm.  It is free and the room is handicap accessible.

We will have several guest speakers including:

  • Joshua Hawn: the pastor of First Baptist Church for the last fourteen years. He met his wife Amy at MBBC (Watertown, WI), and after getting a B.A., moved to Park Rapids. He has five children which keep him as busy as his church family and other community commitments do.”
  •  Stephen C Norby:  the Lead Pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids since 2009. He has a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary St. Paul and a B.A. from Concordia College with majors in Religion and Psychology.
  • Jessica Baum: a professional trauma informed clinical mental health professional at GroupWorks Wellness and Recovery Services for five years.  She has a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in Communication and M.A. from St. Mary's University of MN., in Counseling Psychology.  Jessica's professional focus is healing grief and trauma through compassion training, self-care and mindfulness practices for mental health recovery.
  • Kent Hering: a 20+ year resident of northern Minnesota and a retired Electronics Engineer.  In retirement, Kent and his bride pedaled across America from San Diego to Bar Harbor, Maine.  On the journey, Kent was touched by the heart of America.  The kindness of strangers transcended opinions and politics.  After that journey, Kent became an Ambassador for Braver Angels, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to bridging the partisan divide by providing the skills and safe spaces we need to be able to listen to each other, to better understand our differences, and to identify common ground from which we can move toward solutions to the issues that face our communities and our nation.
Our speakers will be addressing the current situation within Hubbard County and ways in which citizens can better communicate with each other to support our community without getting caught up in the animosity of the time.

LWVPark Rapids  is  a nonpartisan organization dedicated to researching complex questions from multiple viewpoints. We promote access to nonpartisan information about candidates and help new voters register and understand the voting process. If you have any questions or need more information about this program, please email lwvparkrapids@lwvmn.org.

Election Year 2024 starts this month!

How can that be?
The election is not until November 2024, right?

Not exactly!

If you want to have a say in:
how your party is run,
who its candidates are,
what are party priorities,

In Minnesota the process starts this month.

By November 2024 those decisions will already be made. During the nomination process, the Political Parties will have picked their candidates for all elected offices from President to state legislators, approved their party platforms and elected leaders to guide local county parties for the next two years.
According to Kay Rave, Hubbard County Auditor, “The 2020 Presidential Nomination Primary election saw 2,962 votes cast in Hubbard County, or 22 percent of 13,280 voters registered on March 3, 2020.” In comparison the 2020 General Election had an 86 percent  turnout. Hubbard County can improve these statistics.

If you have never been or it has been a long time since you have been to a party precinct caucus in MN and/or you didn’t vote in the first Presidential Nominating Primary in 2020, come to Northwoods Bank Community Room at 6:30 p.m. on January 31st.  League of Women Voters and Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce will present Presidential Nominating Primary/Party Caucus Nuts and Bolts.

A panel will consist of a representative from the Hubbard County Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL), a representative from the Hubbard County Republican Party (GOP) and the voter service chair from the League of Women Voters Park Rapids (LWVPRA). Panelists representing the political parties will explain their caucus procedures and the importance of getting grassroots input. The LWVPRA voter chair will explain Presidential Nominating Primary procedures. This Primary is an election run by the county for the political parties. Voters may go to the courthouse to cast an early ballot (from Jan. 19 to March 4) or go to their regular polling place March 5 to cast a ballot.

Programs such as this are part of the the League of Women Voters of Minnesota mission of voter education. LWV Minnesota is a nonpartisan organization, committed to civic engagement through the work of 35 community-based chapters with more than 2,300 members in Minnesota.  Being nonpartisan means that LWV neither opposes nor supports a political party or candidate even when the office is unaffiliated with a party.

All programs are free and open to the public. Please direct any questions about LWVPRA activities, events or on how to join by emailing: lwvparkrapids@lwvmn.org. Follow our activities, events on this website:

New Minnesota election laws: How will they affect our community?

We had a great audience for this presentation on October 17th.  If you missed the program use this link to watch the video:  https://youtu.be/P89nZOM9QOk

Thank you Michelle Witte for a very informative evening.

As many of you have heard, the Minnesota Legislature successfully passed nearly 3 dozen new voting and election laws during the 2023 legislative session, which have made voting and elections easier and safer for all Minnesotans. This includes passing "Restore the Vote" legislation, which is now in effect to help restore voting rights to people who were formerly incarcerated. Nearly 55,000 people living in their communities now have their voting rights restored. It also includes the pre-registration of 16 and 17 year olds, and the start of Automatic Voter Registration in 2024.

League of Women Voters Park Rapids Area (LWVPRA) will be presenting a public program to address the new changes in voting laws and rules. Michelle Witte, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota, will be our guest speaker. Besides being our executive director, she has followed the proud League tradition of women serving in government, having served as an elected school board member for South Washington County Schools. Michelle will also be speaking to Rotary and at the high school on Oct. 18.

The LWVPRA program will be at the Northwoods Bank Community Room (1200 1st St E, Park Rapids)  Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Come learn more about the new laws, what they will mean for voting in 2024, and how you can stay informed about next year’s elections and candidates

Also learn how community members can be more involved in elections by becoming election judges, and observing the Public Accuracy Tests and Post Election Reviews that take place around our elections to ensure the integrity of our voting systems. Voting in 2024 starts Jan. 19, when early voting begins for the Presidential Preference Primary.

Join us with your questions and get informed!

League of Women Voters Park Rapids Area  (LWVPRA), encourages its members to be informed participants in political activity, but as a nonpartisan organization, we neither oppose nor support a political party or candidate even when the office is unaffiliated with a party. That does not preclude us from taking positions on issues and we have taken many positions over the past many decades. Our platform is nonpartisan so there is no question of our interest in anything other than the general welfare of our democracy and its citizens. All our programs are free and open to the public.

Please direct any questions about LWVPRA activities, events or how to join by emailing:  lwvparkrapids@lwvmn.org.
